Social Media trends in Dubai: Cadbury Dairy Milk Joy Elevator brings back the fun in simple flash games!

19 Feb

When I was a boy, social media was unheard of. All we had was television-we shared the stories of late evening drama and government sponsored programs at school. Our Facebook was our faces; anyone could easily read out an entire episode of Malgudi days from our faces as we discussed it again an again. The small advertisement snippets we had really enchanted us. Hajmola Candy, Vicco Vajradanti, Nirma Saabun…and of course, Cadbury Dairy Milk… (Hope my children growing up in Dubai will recognize the first three brands I mentioned one day!)

The violet colored Cadbury Dairy Milk Joy Elevator app takes me back to my childhood. The profile image is inviting and directly conveys the fact that the promotion could win you a Canon Digital Camera. Following the current trend, the image also asks you to click on the tab below. The layout is modern and here too you can find the current trend among designers-to use ribbons in the design. Cadbury Arabia’s Social media manager does not want you to miss the fun!

The welcoming page is bilingual-both Arabic and English. I think Cadbury Arabia recognizes the fact that having posts in Arabic greatly improves one’s fan engagement. The App icon is perfect, no clutter. Only the Joy of Joy Elevator in stamp size! I select the privacy setting as Only Me, a habit I keep so that my initial experience with any Facebook app remains private. Then comes another permission window “Joy Elevator would also like permission to:Post to Facebook as me-Joy Elevator may post status messages, notes, photos and videos on your behalf.” There is an Allow and Skip button…l tried Skip. It takes a while to load the page- but soon I enter the English section.

This is what I see…

What follows is a great Facebook game anyone can play. I don’t want to break the fun by explaining the game here action-by-action., level-by-level. This simple flash game is really really engaging with different types of small games inbuilt into the main game. It’s addictive and evident that fans will come again and again to the page to accomplish big points! As obvious from the image above, the 3 best gamers stand a chance to win prizes from Cadbury Arabia.

I could not spot a Facebook Ad promoting the contest as I write this, but I am sure that they exist.

As I write this “71,284 like this and 5,716 are talking about this”- so in the coming days I am planning to visit the fan page again and take a look.

Good work Cadbury Arabia.

Social Media Manager, it’s time to increase our fan base 729%

See, the problem is, everybody wants to have a huge fan base on Facebook. Social Media is the buzz word. Even a paperweight manufacturer based in Dubai or an all herbal Agarbathi shop in Agra wants to have a fan base of 20, 000, 00 in 3 months.

Forget fan engagement, just numbers will do. Form the Director Social Media to the Community Manager, the pressure is on. No allocated online budgets, just two banner ads on three non related websites. The brand manager or more often, the brand custodian (means that very rich internet illiterate guy who owns the company that owns this brand) wants wall posts like “Dear fans, LIKE this comment if your gold fish can swallow frozen beer froth” everyday to exponentially improve brand loyalty. Everybody is running. Everybody is trying to make everything viral.

I think the age of Social Media waste creation has begun.
